Masters & undergraduate research
Routes into research before a PhD — summer internships, MPhys projects, and Masters-by-research opportunities within the group.
Undergraduate summer internships
Each year I'm able to host a small number of undergraduate summer research placements, often supported by schemes such as the group's own funding or external bursaries. These are a great way to get a first taste of research — typically a few weeks working alongside the group on a self-contained project. If you're interested, get in touch early in the year, as places and funding are limited.
MPhys projects
Current Manchester MPhys students can carry out their fourth-year project with the group. Projects span the group's full programme — from phenomenology and data analysis to detector studies and machine learning — and are shaped around your interests and the group's active work.

MScR & MPhil
For those who want a longer, fuller research experience, a Master's by Research (MScR) or MPhil is a year or more of supervised research and can be an excellent bridge towards a PhD. These can be self-funded or supported by scholarship; if you're considering this route, I'm happy to discuss possible projects.
How to apply
Get in touch before making a formal application so we can discuss whether there's a good fit and shape a project together. A strong initial enquiry includes:
- A short note on which part of the group's work interests you and why.
- Your academic background and a CV or transcript.
- Your intended funding route and timescale.
A note on applications: the clearer and more specific your enquiry, the more useful my reply can be. Generic, untargeted messages are hard to act on.
