Over the years, as a PhD supervisor — and through roles coordinating postgraduate research and directing a Centre for Doctoral Training — I've read a great many applications and spoken with a great many prospective students. The notes below are my personal take on what makes the process go well. They aren't rules, and other supervisors will see things differently, but I hope they're useful.
